iHost.za.net

Nov 9th, 2005 Posted in Blog Entries | 2 comments »

I have created a cheap domain name where I can host my wonderful test sites, so I don’t have to host them on my PC, which will make things more permanent.

Anyway, I thought that now I will maybe be able to move my blog there, which will make life MUCH easier for me….well, no, not really, but then I have a fancy subdomain for my blog.

Anyway, I could have used an other domain extension, but I thought that .za.net would be best because it sounds so techy! ihost.za.net! Not to mention, don’t have to pay yearly renewal fees for .za.net.

Also, I wish to just state that my website competiton is going really well. I think I migh have someone in mind to win, but we will see what happens. I am not going to say anything. it would be agaist the rules.

I have recently finished, sort of, the the school website, www.durbies.co.za, which me and my friend, Erik, made. Actually, he made the template, and I am in charge of programming the entire behemoth. We are going to have a meeting with the guy who owns the domain to talk to him about alternative hosting solutions and all that jazz.

And, now I am going to bed. So, bye!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Nov 6th, 2005 Posted in Blog Entries | no comment »

I have been looking at a clip which shows Draco malfoy, the flying ferret. And then I decided that i will go see the first performance of Goblet of Fire in South Africa, even if it kills me. Which means, the release here is actually 2 December, but I will see it on the 1st at nine o clock in the morning, making me and my friends, oficially, the first people in SouthAfrica, to see it. Exept of course those who test the film reel, etc.

So, I can’t wait. What are your views on the film? What do you think it is going to be like?

New VH Competition

Nov 1st, 2005 Posted in Blog Entries | no comment »

I have been getting bored with my websites, Virtual Hogwarts‘, name. It is so….plain. So, I came up with a competition on my site so people can maybe get a new name. Here is the quote from the post:

I have been thinking that we should have a competition. This will be a Christmas present for all the students, professors and prefects of Virtual Hogwarts. And here is what I am planning:

Have you ever thought that we need a new name. A more exiting name than the one we currently have? Maybe something more adventrous, more sprty, more classy, however you see it? Well, your task in this competition is to come up with a new name for Virtual Hogwarts. Please be very original. Along with this name I will buy a new domain. (the www.something.co.za)

So, here is more details:
- Think of a new, original name for VH, be it in whatever language. (If it is, then please supply a translation).

- Give a suggested domain name (www.my-new-name.com), which can be a .com or a .co.za domain. (please make sure the domain doesn’t exist by testing it in your browser)

Rules

  • Everyone may enter the competition. Whether it be a professor or a prefect or a student.
  • Every candidate may enter as many times as he/she would like to and submit as many names as possible.
  • Every entry will be read through and judged by me and the finalists will be judged by the professors.

To enter the competition, go to this page and fill out the form. You may fill it out as many times as you like:

http://www.virtualhogwarts.co.za/form.htm

Anyway, so, if you are reading this blog, amy you can enter, but the prize wont suit you. Speaking of which, the prize is 100 house points, 200 galleons and he/she gets to be headmaster for a week.

Also, I have been lookign further into the linux, but the only prob with my current distro is the fact that there is no sound, which is a problem because I will be using midi files more than anything else. Anyway, it picks up my sound card, but no sound…

Anyway, off to eplore the net some more. Bye!

Linux!

Oct 30th, 2005 Posted in Blog Entries | no comment »

I am writing this from Mandriva Linux 2005. Now, I know it is not the latest version, since the latest version in 2006. Anyway, now I must say that I kinda like linux, but I am still glad that I have two hard drives so I can switch between Linux and Windows. Basically, what I usually do on windows is this:

  • Converting Midiś to sheet music and back
  • Play Games (mostly Harry Potter games)
  • Vitual Server (what I do is I test php scripts, like SMF and so I don have to upload them)
  • Download MP3ś via Ares, a p2p network.
  • Writing and editing music (for my musicals)
  • Ripping DVDś to ISO files and writing them.
  • Mounting ISO files on Virtual DVD drives.
  • Chatting on IM things like MSN, Yahoo and Google Talk

That is all I can think of which I do on Windows frequently, besides surfing the web, of course. Now, I have come to understand that you can do all these things with Linux. The Midiś I can edit with Rosegarden; notation software. The Games…well, they are a bit harder, but I assume that you can do this with wine. The Virtual Server is easy since that is what Linux is born to do. About the MP3 downloading, I am sure linux has a p2p system. I don´t like Bit Torrent that much. Linux has tons of music editing software things, like Audicity etc. As fr the ripping of DVDś. I will have to get back to you on that one. And I know for a fact Linux can mount ISO files out of the box. And Linux also comes with Gaim so I can IM as much as i like.

Anyway, so that is basic things I need from linux.
Oh well, off to search for answers….

Sound, Glorious Sound…

I have recently had an interest in Midi files because I needed backtracks for my musical, so I downloaded a few midi files, but I realised that I had the desire to edit them. Now, I have only completed Grade one in musical theory but I am thinking of taking it up again. Now, back to the story.

Now, I was googling for something to convert midi files to sheet music and back, and I found midinotate musician. It is a great piece of work. I just love it. You can basically search for any midi on the web, edit it, play it back do whatever you want with it. I mean of course editing it in sheet music format.

Anyway, too bad the software only allows a 30 day trail. Oh Well…maybe I will buy it when the trail is over. However, there are always ways to cheat these kinda things….

Anyway, talk to you again later. Going to search for my favorite song’s backtracks.

Just Browsing

I was just looking around the net, and I was looking at my site. I also looked at how well Google indexes my site. When I search for Virtual Hogwarts on Google, I am on the 5th place. I suppose this is better than last time, when I was 9th, but it is still not satifactory. I decided that the only way I can increase my google rank, is by doing the following:

  • Contacting my web host and asking if he would be so kind as to install Mod rewrite for me. Mod rewrite is a small module that comes with Apach (the server software) and all he has to do is uncomment one line of code. That means deleting one letter from one line of code.
  • Once he has done this, my site will be able to use it’s “Search Engine Friendly Urls” feature. This means I will have html pages, instead of ugly php urls.
  • Then, my google pagerank will increase dramatically.

I have worked out that if I get this feature it should be about 3 months and I will be at least number 2. If not number one. Not only that, but more people will be attracted to my site, which means more traffic which means more members and so it continues.

Besides that, I have once again been thinking, maybe I should do something about my Linux fear. You may not know, but I have been testing Linux for a very long time. I just don’t want to get too attached because I want to test different Distro’s before i settle. I don’t want to settle for the first best option.

Anyway….that is all I have to say….bye!

I am ever so sorry

Right, I know I han’t posted in this blog in like, forever…but there is a perfectly good reason. I am extremely busy, and also, like before, I have been testing Wordpress….anyway, I liked it…kinda…

So, I am now back and I am going to post. Even if I do not do so often, I hope I will. Also, you guys may not know this, but I wrote another musical. This time a 93 minute one. I don’t think it will ever be performed, but I surely hope so. Of course, I won’t acept it to be performed on stage. it wont work as a stage production. It has to be on screen where emotions can really be shown.

Anyway, so, I will post again later…I have lots to tell you guys. Anyway, thanks for reading this. :)

Another day…

Jun 7th, 2005 Posted in Blog Entries | no comment »

Today I just lokoed back on the wonderful musical I wrote a few months ago. I relived the songs, the words, and memories.
When something important in your life happens t always seems like it never really happned after all the hype is over. That is how I feel about my musical and the Revue.
Oh well, I guess nothing can last forever.

It is teusday, and the exams are going on. Tomorrow I am writing Life Orientation (is that how you spell it?) which is going to be quite easy, judging from the previous tests and exams. Plus, the work we got to learn is old stuff which we did last year.
I tell you, if I ever hear the ancronym “AIDS” again, I swear I will slit my wrists!

Here is my scedule for te rest of the exam:

Life Orentation
English Home Language: Literature
Arts and Culture
Math 1
Off day
Afrikaans: Poësie (Poetry)
VERY LONG WEEKEND (4 days)
Natural Sciences
Off day
English Home Language: Language
Math 2

Well, thatdoes look exiting, doesn’t it. That which is in Italics, I will enjoy writing (mostly) that which is in bold I look forward to the most (my off days in which I don’t write anything). So, I am only scared of Math, Natural Sciencea and English Language.

I suppose I should go sleep. Bue!

Monday

Well, nothing really happened. As you maybe know, I am in the middle of exams. They are not that difficult, except maybe one or two here and there. But so far so good. The only exam I am terified of is Mathematics. I wish I could just skip it. But since I can’t…I might as well except my fate. I do not understand ANYTHING to do with math.

Oh well. At least we write on a Monday, so will ahve the whole weekened to study. Thank goodness.

Anyway, the stupid server for my website is still offline, so, I think I am loosing many members. In fact, it would be a miracle if I still have any members. Hopefully some of them have remained loyal to me. :’(

Anyway, I will say goodbye now. Bye.
