The Gizmo Project
I wasn’t sure whether to post this under the ‘Software Reviews’ category or the ‘Blog entries’ category, so I went with the former because this piece of Software really deserves your attention. Why? Because of its sheer openness and the support from Google it receives.
The Gozmo Project is, in short, real competition for Skype. I see a bright future ahead of it. It is a IM and SIP phone system, meaning that you can call to landlines (for the same price you would with Skype) and other people using SIP programs (most do) and Jabber contacts. Most importantly, you can also call contacts from your Google talk account. Now, isn’t that spectacular!
Unlike Spyke, Gizmo is fully supported under all operating systems. So is (theoretically) supported across Linux, Windows and Mac, but development for Linux and Mac are close to extinct. Both are many versions behind the Windows version.
Another feature which will count in Gizmo’s favour, is the fact that it uses Open Standards, even though it is not currently Open Source. Skype currently has the major market share in this sector, but its proprietary system will be its downfall.Watch
